The coffee producers
The Virunga National Park is known to have some of the finest coffee growing conditions in the world. The women of the Kirindera Washing Station chose to bring together the coffee of 202 smallholder female farmers to create what they call “Women’s Peace Coffee”. They named it this because of the atrocities that have been committed and which continue to occur in Eastern DR Congo. These women, many of whom are war widows, are also deliberately employing young people so that they can provide them with an alternative to being drawn in to join the armed groups that are destabilising Virunga National Park. They have a simple goal - to see peace for everyone living in DR Congo. These women take great pride in this coffee's high quality, and in the immense organisational efforts that have made it possible.
