The coffee producers
In 2013, sisters Mahder and Hirut Birhanu revived the dormant Dumerso washing station in Yirgacheffe, turning a family passion for coffee into a women-owned business. Determined to reach the market and earn a fair price, they secured their own export license and built a company that now employs about 90% women during harvest season, with many women among its permanent staff.
Their most empowering work looks ahead: a planned on-site childcare centre so women never choose between working and caring for their children, plus off-season handcraft programs generating year-round income. Through these steps, the sisters prove women can lead, employ, and uplift other women in an industry that has long undervalued their labour.
Mahder insists that understanding coffee means understanding the people who grow it, inviting buyers to visit Yirgacheffe and see the human story behind every bean. In her vision, empowerment isn't a single victory, but a step-by-step process - one that lifts women through employment, care, and dignity, season after season.
